In yet another episode of which noughties trend are we talking up in SS/23? we have a welcome return for sheer fabrics. Slightly edgy, yes, but this is what fashion is all about. Our advice is to read the below, plan your sheer wardrobe additions and, above all else, buy some nice underwear.
The Trend
Sheer has made a welcome comeback for SS/23. Not just a style moment, you can also drop sheer in to body positivity conversations, too. “It [sheer] is a protest against conventional judgements,” said Rick Owens of the trend.
Where Have I Seen It?
The SS/23 fashion weeks have been ablaze with sheer materials, and it was championed on the runways by the likes of Rick Owens, Prada, LaQuan Smith, Victoria Beckham and more. Meanwhile, the material has moved swiftly to street style, with Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa, and Kim K, all spotted wearing the trend. A quick scroll through either of their IG profiles will reveal recent posts of them in some sort of sheer wear.
History
Sheer materials have a long history in fashion, dating back to the earliest times. In antiquity, sheer was considered a luxury, while later it was also linked to Freedom. In the ’90s –where the current fashion inspiration is drawn from – the sheer dressing was linked to power. Now in the post-pandemic era of 2022, the trend has again received a rush of popularity.
How Is It Being Worn?
Expect long and flowing dresses as well as fitted tops in sheer. In recent shows, major designers have created sheer dresses, that are easily worn with a set of the heels. meanwhile, designers such as Nensi Dojaka have daringly paired everyday sheer wear with lingerie.
