Move over superhero franchises, there’s a new kind of blockbuster in town, and it’s all for a worthy cause. Forget the CGI spectacle and popcorn-fueled thrills, because Cinema for Gaza is taking centre stage, an initiative uniting the glamorous world of cinema with the urgent need for humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip.

Spearheaded by a formidable quintet – film journalists and filmmakers Hanna Flint, Julia Jackman, Leila Latif, Sophie Monks Kaufman, and Helen Simmons – Cinema for Gaza transcends the silver screen, orchestrating a captivating online auction unlike any other. Fancy a cup of tea with the ever-enigmatic Tilda Swinton? Or perhaps a coveted piece of movie memorabilia holds more allure? Cinema for Gaza offers a treasure trove of experiences donated by a constellation of stars – from the comedic brilliance of Ramy Youssef to the regal presence of Imelda Staunton, the list boasts names that would make any red carpet sizzle.

But the true power of Cinema for Gaza lies not in the allure of celebrity, but in the cause it champions. The beneficiary, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) (Instagram), is a vital lifeline in a region grappling with the harsh realities of conflict. MAP goes beyond offering immediate medical assistance; they are actively building the long-term resilience of the Palestinian healthcare system, empowering local communities with the tools and skills they need to thrive.

The auction, which launched on April 2nd, surpassed a staggering £41,650 ($52,343) in cash donations on the first day, currently having gathered over £90,000 ($113,594), a testament to the overwhelming support for the cause.

A growing list of high-profile names from the film and TV world have joined the campaign.  Filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, despite recent controversies, stands alongside Tilda Swinton and Succession star Brian Cox in donating unique experiences. Up for grabs? A ticket to Ramy Youssef’s live show and afterparty, a chance to learn porridge-making from Challengers actor Josh O’Connor, or even a bedtime story read by Tilda Swinton herself over Zoom.

The list of treasures keeps growing. Signed film posters from Jonathan Glazer, a signed Old Oak poster and script from veteran filmmaker Ken Loach, and a signed collection of movies and posters from documentarian Asif Kapadia are just a few of the incredible offerings. New gifts are set to be added, including a signed Supernova film poster from Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci, and Harry Macqueen. Actresses Rebecca Hall and Maisie Williams have also joined the roster, offering signed bedtime stories and a Game of Thrones DVD respectively.

The urgency is clear. The auction closes on Friday, April 12th, at midnight BST. Every penny raised goes directly to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a healthcare organisation desperately needed in the face of a looming famine and ongoing conflict. The UN has issued stark warnings, and the recent deaths of aid workers highlight the precarious situation in Gaza.

With over 32,000 lives lost in the recent conflict, the need for healthcare is paramount. Join Cinema for Gaza and be the hero this story needs. Bid on an experience, donate directly, and raise your voice for a brighter future for Gaza.
